James Whisner LCSW Mental Health Therapist serving Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania in person and virtual therapy

A more in-depth look at my practice...
Hello! I'm James. At least read the first paragraph before you click on out of here!

It took me a bit, but I have found my place, my way of helping my fellow humans and contributing to society. My background is unique, I came into this field later in life. In my practice, I have evolved how I do things based on what I learned in the university, during my internships, and working in the community. I also apply lessons I have learned from my clients; they have been some of my greatest teachers. I see therapy as a two-way process, where those you help often teach and humble you the process. I also incorporate some of my own life experiences into my therapy sessions. I have overcome some hardships of my own and actually enjoy helping others figure out how to navigate their own hardships. If you are looking for a real person that will listen without judgement, I might be the person for you.

Thanks for at least you letting me give you the condensed version of my spiel! You are free to click on out of here now. Or explore my site a little more if you want to get a better idea of what you can expect in therapy if you are considering moving forward with me. Either way, best of luck in your journey and I do hope you find the person that you will help you find your true north whether it is me or not!

I have been working in mental health for about 8 years now. I have worked in home-based services such as family based and wrap around services for children, as a counselor/supervisor at an inpatient mental health facility, and currently as an outpatient therapist in a community health clinic.

My time spent working in community mental health has given me experience in a broad range of mental health issues. I have assisted people experiencing relationship problems, trauma, depression, religious trauma, and various forms of anxiety which I consider to be a specialized area for my practice.

I have a casual approach and do my best to meet my clients where they are in their situation. Each of our situations are different, no matter what "diagnosis" we share. I have formed my therapeutic approach based on studies of various methods (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is my most used approach), what I have learned from my past clients, and my own personal life experiences. Sessions will always be structured to fit your needs and make YOU comfortable in you therapy experience.

I will coordinate care with your medical provider/ prescriber at your request and their cooperation. My experience has shown me that this when your therapist and prescriber listen to each other, you get better treatment.

Keep on scrolling if you've got this far, I have given some ideas below of some of the typical issues my clients face. I even have plans to add on a blog to my site to give you a better picture of what you expect to experience when working with me. I listen, sometimes I push, I give input, I'll even throw in some humor and the occasional really bad dad joke for good measure!
